Bishopsgate Removals Health and Safety Policy
Bishopsgate Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial removals, packing, handling, loading, transport and storage.
We recognise our responsibilities under applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice. We aim to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm through careful planning, effective training and continuous improvement.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our key objectives are to:
Identify, assess and control risks arising from our removal and storage operations.
Provide safe systems of work, safe equipment and appropriate supervision.
Ensure all team members are competent, properly trained and aware of their responsibilities.
Maintain a working environment that supports physical safety and mental wellbeing.
Communicate clearly with customers about safety considerations during each move.
Monitor performance and review this policy regularly to improve our standards.
Responsibilities and Management
Overall responsibility for health and safety at Bishopsgate Removals rests with senior management, who ensure that sufficient resources are provided to implement this policy. Management is responsible for setting clear safety expectations, maintaining appropriate insurance and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and codes of practice.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working practices on site and in vehicles. This includes briefing crews, monitoring behaviour, addressing unsafe practices and reporting incidents or near misses.
All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Everyone working for Bishopsgate Removals is expected to follow instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment where required and report hazards or concerns without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments for our core activities, including packing, lifting and carrying, use of trolleys and lifting devices, loading and unloading vehicles, driving and on-site work at customer premises. Where necessary, site-specific assessments are carried out to address particular access issues, restricted spaces, stairs, long carries or unusual items.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop and implement safe systems of work. These include planning vehicle access and parking, safe lifting techniques, team lifting for heavy or awkward items, use of appropriate handling equipment, securing loads in vehicles, and safe driving practices.
Customers are encouraged to inform us in advance of any specific access challenges or items of unusual size, weight or fragility, so that we can plan the move safely and provide the right equipment and personnel.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of our operations and an area of particular focus. Our staff receive training in correct lifting and carrying techniques to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Heavy or bulky items are handled by more than one person where appropriate, and mechanical aids are used whenever reasonably practicable.
We provide suitable handling equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps and ramps, and ensure that these are maintained in good working condition. Staff are instructed to check equipment before use, report defects immediately and not to use unsafe items.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition, with regular inspections and servicing in line with legal requirements and manufacturer guidance. Loads are secured carefully to prevent movement during transit and to protect both our staff and other road users.
Drivers are required to hold appropriate licences, follow road traffic laws and adhere to company guidelines on safe driving, vehicle checks, securing loads and managing fatigue. They must not drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that could impair their ability to operate a vehicle safely.
Work at Customer Premises
We recognise that our work often takes place in homes, offices and shared buildings, where members of the public may be present. Our teams take care to minimise risks by maintaining clear walkways, managing trip hazards such as loose packing materials, and communicating with customers about areas that should be kept clear during loading and unloading.
Where stairs, lifts, narrow corridors or shared access areas present additional risks, our crews will take extra care in moving goods and may ask for temporary restriction of access to ensure safe operations. We treat customer property with respect and aim to prevent damage by using protective coverings and appropriate handling techniques.
Training, Information and Supervision
Bishopsgate Removals provides induction and ongoing training to all relevant staff on health and safety responsibilities, safe lifting, equipment use, vehicle safety, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Additional training is provided for specialist tasks where required.
Information on risks and safe working methods is shared through briefings, written instructions and supervision on site. Supervisors monitor compliance with safe systems of work and provide guidance or corrective action where necessary.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. We keep records of such events, investigate the causes and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence where possible.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, serious injury, vehicle collision or spillage. Staff are briefed on how to respond, when to contact emergency services and how to protect themselves, customers and the public in emergency situations.
Wellbeing, Welfare and Consultation
We recognise that good health and safety management includes supporting physical and mental wellbeing. We aim to schedule work realistically, avoid excessive fatigue, provide adequate rest breaks and encourage open communication about workload and stress.
We consult with employees on health and safety matters and take account of their feedback when reviewing procedures or introducing new equipment or working methods. Concerns raised by staff or customers about safety issues are taken seriously and addressed promptly.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or our operations. The latest version is made available to employees and customers on request.
Bishopsgate Removals expects all employees, contractors and partners to cooperate fully with this policy and to contribute actively to maintaining a culture of safety in every aspect of our removal and storage services.
